BEAUFORT CO., SC (WTOC)- Beaufort County could be facing school budget cuts and the board wants to hear from you tonight.
A public hearing was held on Tuesday night as the Beaufort County School Board met with parents at Battery Creek High School. Over the last three years, the board has eliminated 169 positions and another 45 are on the chopping block this year. The district is being asked to cut $6 million from next year's budget.
"We have made significant cuts
over the past three years, 169 positions have been eliminated. This year, so
far, we're talking about 45 positions. My concern is if those 45 positions will
impact or adversely impact reducing the achievement gap or improving the academic
performance of our students. We need to re-examine that," said Fred Washington,
Jr., Beaufort County School Board Chairman.
The next forum will take place at 7 p.m. at Bluffton High School.
