HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC (WTOC)- (AP) - Beaufort County is bringing out its cardboard cops as part of a statewide crackdown on litter.
The crackdown will include 7-foot tall signs are going up around the county, real deputies stationed at trash dumps to make sure garbage is disposed of properly, and officers patrolling roadways looking for people tossing cigarette butts out their windows or trash falling from the back of trucks.
Authorities say they are more likely to issue citations instead of warnings. They say breaking the litter laws could cost up to $1,000.
April is "Zero Tolerance for Litter" month across South Carolina.
